Description
What Is ellaOne?
ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It contains ulipristal acetate, which alters hormone activity and delays ovulation. Unlike daily birth control pills, ellaOne works only when needed — usually after missed contraception or a condom failure.
What Is ellaOne Used For?
ellaOne prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your regular contraception fails. It can:
- – Delay or stop ovulation
- – Prevent the release of an egg
- – Reduce the chance of fertilisation
- – Offer backup if you miss a pill
- – Provide protection up to 5 days after sex
However, it works best when taken as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours.
How Does ellaOne Work?
ellaOne contains ulipristal acetate, which blocks the effects of progesterone — the hormone that triggers ovulation. As a result, it delays the release of an egg. This prevents sperm from meeting an egg and greatly reduces the risk of pregnancy.
How Should ellaOne Be Used?
- – Take one tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex
- – You can take it with or without food
- – Use within 120 hours (5 days) — the sooner, the better
- – Do not take more than one per cycle
- – If you vomit within 3 hours, speak to a pharmacist or doctor
After taking, use condoms until your next period to stay protected.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Like all medicines, ellaOne may cause side effects. The most common include:
- – Headache
- – Nausea
- – Tiredness
- – Stomach pain or cramps
- – Early, late, or irregular periods
These symptoms usually pass quickly. However, if your period is more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test.
What Warnings And Precautions Should Be Considered?
- – Do not use ellaOne if you are already pregnant
- – Speak to a pharmacist if you are breastfeeding
- – It may interact with some medicines and hormonal contraception
- – Avoid taking more than once per cycle
- – Always read the leaflet and ask for advice if unsure
When taken correctly, this treatment provides safe and effective emergency contraception.
How Should It Be Stored?
- – Keep below 25°C
- – Store in the original packaging
- – Protect from moisture and heat
- – Keep out of reach of children
- – Do not use after the expiry date
