Description
What Is Oestrogel?
Oestrogel is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) gel that delivers estradiol, a form of oestrogen, through the skin. It’s designed to relieve menopause symptoms in women with low oestrogen levels and can be used with or without a separate progestogen, depending on whether you still have your womb.
The gel is applied once daily to clean, dry skin — offering a flexible, non-tablet alternative to traditional HRT.
What Is It Used For?
Oestrogel helps to manage symptoms of the menopause caused by falling oestrogen levels.
It may help to:
- – Reduce hot flushes and night sweats
- – Relieve vaginal dryness or discomfort
- – Improve mood, focus, and sleep
- – Support bone strength and reduce the risk of osteoporosis
Doctors often prescribe Oestrogel to women who prefer a transdermal (through the skin) form of HRT.
How Does Oestrogel Work?
Oestrogel contains estradiol, a synthetic version of the oestrogen your body stops producing during menopause. When you apply the gel to your skin, it absorbs into your bloodstream and restores hormone levels to reduce symptoms.
If you still have your womb, your doctor will usually prescribe a progestogen alongside Oestrogel to protect the womb lining.
How Should You Use Oestrogel?
To get the best results, apply Oestrogel once a day at around the same time.
Here’s how to use it:
- – Measure the dose using the pump dispenser as prescribed by your doctor
- – Apply the gel to clean, dry, unbroken skin on your arms, shoulders, or thighs
- – Allow the gel to dry for 5–10 minutes before covering with clothes
- – Wash your hands after applying
- – Do not apply to the breasts or genital area
- – Avoid washing the area or applying skincare products for at least an hour
Are There Any Side Effects?
Like all HRT medicines, Oestrogel may cause side effects, although many women use it without issues.
Common side effects include:
- – Headache, breast tenderness, or skin irritation
- – Nausea, mood changes, or bloating
- – Rare but serious effects include blood clots, stroke, or breast cancer
Speak to a doctor if you notice unusual bleeding, chest pain, or swelling in your legs.
What Should You Know Before Using Oestrogel?
Check with your doctor to make sure Oestrogel is safe and appropriate for you.
Avoid using Oestrogel if you:
- – Have or have had breast cancer, blood clots, liver problems, or unexplained vaginal bleeding
- – Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- – Are taking certain medications — always discuss with your doctor before starting
You’ll need regular check-ups to monitor your health while using HRT.
How Should You Store It?
Store the gel properly to keep it effective and safe for use.
Follow these storage tips:
- – Store below 25°C
- – Keep the pump container closed when not in use
- – Keep out of reach and sight of children
- – Do not use after the expiry date on the packaging
